Raza Kazim - The Founder

Our Patron & Founder

Raza Kazim

Raza’s journey of rejecting needless suffering and pursuing human happiness began as early as the age of 12. That is in 1942, he remarkably became a part of the Indian Congress Movement. This pivotal time marked the beginning of Raza’s intellectual enterprise, encompassing politics, philosophy, art and culture. Shortly afterwards in 1945, Raza shifted away from the Congress and got involved with the Muslim League Movement to work for an independent Pakistan. However, after being disillusioned with the Pakistan movement as well, he became a member of the Pakistan Communist Party. During this time period, he also notably became the General Secretary of Pakistan Trade Union Federation and the President of Democratic Students Federation.

Advancing further in his professional career, he earned his LLB in 1953 and soon began his law practice. Subsequently, in 1959, he rose to become an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Afterwards, by the mid-1960s, he started doubting the foundations of Marxist ideology, although remaining firmly committed to it until 1970.

Alongside his noteworthy legal and intellectual pursuits, in 1962 he also designed the world’s first shrimp factory ship, a project realized with the expertise of Norwegian naval architects and engineers.

In the wake of explosive progress in science and technology, he embarked on a new intellectual journey: forging a post-Marxist theory of social change that addressed the problem of human happiness through the modern lenses of Brain Sciences, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics. In 1995, he subsequently founded the Sanjan Nagar Institute of Philosophy and Arts (SIPA) as a practical laboratory to develop and test this emerging theory, for which he coined the term ‘Evolutionary Mentology.’ Demonstrating a practical commitment to applying his theoretical ideas. Successively, he launched the Sanjan Nagar Public Education Trust (SNPET), which provides free education to girls in an underserved area of Lahore.
Evolutionary Mentology is the culmination of Raza’s quest to discover, understand, and operationalize the process of evolutionary change within an individual’s mind and consequently change in the larger macrocosm of society.

EM is a philosophical cum scientific inquiry into the origins, evolution, and functioning of both the human mind and the process of Nature as a whole, their future evolutionary direction and the ensuing relationship between them. His significant artistic endeavors in music and photography are not separate pursuits but direct, practical offshoots of his work in Mentology.

Raza Kazim’s multidisciplinary engagement with the arts has been recognized through significant institutional partnerships and personal creative achievements. In 2000, he was awarded a fellowship by the prestigious National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore, thereafter in 2001, leading to a ten-year public-private partnership to establish and direct a groundbreaking four-year Degree Program in Musicology. This initiative, which produced its first graduates in 2006, allowed him to redefine pedagogical standards in musical theory and practice.

Driven by a quest for perfect musicality and effective communication, Raza’s theoretical work extends into the exact physics of sound. He has pioneered the design and construction of high-fidelity audio equipment—dubbed ‘Bhulley’ amplifiers and speakers—grounded in his original philosophical concepts and experimental testing. Parallel to this, he achieved a landmark innovative instrument design by creating the ‘Sagar Veena,’ the first non-fretted stringed instrument of its kind for Indian Classical music, featuring a completely original design and structure. His deep understanding of sound was followed by another long-term project, beginning in 1976, of recording Pakistani and Indian artists, through which he developed notable innovative recording techniques.

His artistic passion is also expressed beautifully through his photography, a lifelong pursuit focused on symbolic imagery. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Commonwealth Gallery in London (1988) and the National College of Arts, Lahore (2003), with two photographs selected for the 2006 Noorderlicht Photo festival in Holland. Committed to nurturing new talent, Raza and his wife, Rashida, mentored a group of young local girls at the institute, training them in the art of both black-and-white and color film development.

Through these diverse mediums—from Evolutionary Mentology and Musicology to the crafting of instruments, audio equipment, and symbolic photographs—Raza Kazim has consistently channeled his intellectual and emotional energies toward a singular goal: the meaningful transformation of human life.

Our Vision

In the words of Raza Kazim:

“The objective of the Institute is to discover and establish through knowledge, reason and verification, a framework of theory and practice in an effort to contribute towards a new and superior civilization emerging in our time. The Institute symbolizes my answer to the age-old question of human misery and happiness: taking the next step in human evolution through mental intelligence.”

Consistent with its conceived vision, SIPA has functioned as a dynamic social laboratory, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and innovation.
